Trusted Devices: Remembering a Customer's Browser for Faster Checkout

General General Help

How the Trusted Devices feature works in your public client area: customers tick "Remember me on this device", confirm by email, and return to a prefilled booking with no password. Covers the customer experience, security limits, what you need on your website, and how customers remove a device.

Trusted Devices lets your customers save the browser they book from, so their next visit to your website starts with their details already filled in — no password, no retyping. It is available in the public client area on your site and is confirmed by email, so a saved browser always belongs to a real, verified customer.

1. What Your Customer Sees

The feature appears at three points in a customer's journey:

  • At checkout — the invitation. On the final step of a booking there is a checkbox labelled “Remember me on this device”, with a What is this? link explaining it. It is entirely optional and unticked by default.
  • After booking — the confirmation email. If they ticked the box, the booking completes as normal and we email them a short message asking them to confirm the browser. The email names the device in plain language (“iPhone”, “Windows PC”, “Mac”) so they can recognise it. The link is valid for 24 hours. Until they click it, nothing is remembered.
  • On their next visit — the welcome back. Once confirmed, returning to your site shows a “Welcome back, [First name]” button. One click and their contact details, saved pickup and drop-off addresses, and their card on file are already in place.

Nothing is remembered until the customer clicks the email link. A customer who ignores the email simply books as usual next time.

2. Why It Uses Email Confirmation

The email step is deliberate, and it is what makes the feature safe to offer on a public website. Anyone can tick a checkbox during checkout; only the person who controls the customer's inbox can click the confirmation link. That single step means a saved browser is always tied to a verified customer, and it gives the customer a written record every time a new device is added to their account.

3. What a Remembered Device Can and Cannot Do

A remembered browser gives a deliberately limited session — it speeds up buying, and nothing else.

  • It can: greet the customer by name, prefill their name, email, and phone, offer their saved addresses, and present their card on file for a faster checkout.
  • It cannot: change their email address, change or reveal their password, or alter any account setting. Every one of those actions still requires a full sign-in with a password, even on a remembered device.

The practical effect: if a customer leaves a remembered laptop unattended, someone else could place a booking, but they could not take over the account. This is the same trade-off used by major retail sites, and it is why the feature is limited to checkout convenience.

4. How Customers Manage Their Devices

Every customer has a Trusted Devices page in their account area on your website, at /account/trusteddevices. It is a standard item in the client-area menu, alongside Profile.

  • The page lists each remembered browser with its friendly name, the date it was trusted, and when it was last used.
  • A Remove button next to each one revokes it immediately. The next visit from that browser starts as a new visitor.
  • Viewing and removing devices requires a full sign-in with a password. A remembered device on its own cannot see or change this list — so a person using a saved browser can never quietly remove the real owner's other devices.

Customers can also sign out of just the browser in front of them, which forgets that one device without touching the others.

5. Requirements on Your Website

If your site is hosted and maintained by us, this is already in place. If your website is maintained separately, two pages must exist on your own domain for the feature to work end to end:

  • The confirmation page (/account/device/confirm) — the page the emailed link opens. It must live on your domain rather than ours, because browsers only allow a site to remember a visitor on the address the visitor is actually looking at.
  • The Trusted Devices page (/account/trusteddevices) — the management list described above.

If the confirmation page is missing, customers who click the email link see a plain confirmation notice on our servers instead, and the browser may not be remembered on your site. Contact us and we will add both pages.

6. Availability and Setup

Trusted Devices is built into the shared client-account system and is available to any application with a public client area. It is currently switched on for Limo Man booking, where it pairs with the saved card on file for one-click rebooking; other applications are enabled on request.

There is nothing to configure to switch it on — no keys, no third-party account. The one thing you may want to adjust is the wording of the confirmation email, which uses a standard template we can customise per account to match your brand voice.

7. Common Questions

  • Does this track customers across other websites? No. The saved identifier is a random value created for your site alone, is meaningless anywhere else, and cannot be used to recognise the customer on another business's website — including other sites we host.
  • What if the customer clears their browser data? The device is simply forgotten and they book as a new visitor. They can tick the box again on their next booking.
  • What happens on a shared or public computer? Customers should leave the box unticked. If they tick it by mistake, they can remove the device from the Trusted Devices page or by signing out on that browser.
  • Can a customer remember more than one device? Yes — a phone, a laptop, and a work computer can all be trusted, and each is listed and removable separately.
  • Does the confirmation link expire? Yes, after 24 hours. Requesting a new one automatically cancels any earlier pending link, so only the most recent email ever works.
